Damage Reduction Insurance (in short !)
Personal injury and death:
All our motorcycles are insured according to the minimum requirements of the Chilean and Argentinian authorities. This means that the rider, his passenger AND third parties are covered for medical (!) costs.
Nevertheless, PeruMotors strongly advise their guests to obtain a descent health insurance with maximum coverage in Argentina and Chile for the length of this tour.
Damage to the rental motorcycle and third party property damage:
Included in the package is an insurance which covers damage to the rental motorcycle AND for property damage to third parties, with a deductible/excess of max. US$ 1,200.00.
At the start of the tour the participant must leave a "Security Deposit" of US$ 1,200.00 for the rental motorcycle. We prefer a credit card authorization above cash for this amount.
If you surrender the motorcycle without any damage, we will return the "Security Deposit" directly to you.
If you caused any damage to your rental motorcycle or a third party, this will be settled with the "Security Deposit".
Please, contact us for more information about this insurance.
Day 1 --- Arrival in Villarrica (Chile)
You will arrive in Temuco via Santiago by plane on day one. When all participants arrived your tour guide will arrange the briefing of the upcoming tour. And he will arrange the necessary paperwork and the "Security Deposit" for the motorcycle with you.
Day 2 --- Villarrica - Junin de los Andes (Argentina) / 170 KM
The first riding day. We leave Chile behind us for now, on our way to a very small town in Argentina. For the first time during this tour we'll have to cross te border AND the mighty Andes mountain range.
Day 3 --- Junin de los Andes - Bariloche / 235 KM
Finally we are getting closer and closer to the real Patagonia. Heading south on 'Ruta 40', this is the famous "Route 66" of Argentina. Spectacular riding and views will be your part. We end up in Bariloche, the 'un-official' capital of Patagonia.
Day 4 --- Bariloche - Esquel / 285 KM
We are still following the Ruta 40 south bound. Lunch will be in El Bolson. This town is famous for UFO sightings. After lunch we leave the pavement behind and on gravel we go to the "Los Alerces National Park". After visiting this beautiful park, we ride to Esquel, where we'll stay the night.
Day 5 --- Esquel - Puyuhuapi (Chile) / 265 KM
Heading for the border again. Just after the town of Trevelin, the road changes into gravel. In Chile the unpaved road continues to Futaleufu, and even further to the 'Carretera Austral', the famous southern Chilean highway. In the little town of Puyuhuapi we will find our hotel.
Day 6 --- Puyuhuapi - Coyhaique / 235 KM
Further south on the "Carretera Austral", again a fantastic ride, with spectacular views on the Andes. It seems that it is getting better every day ! Through 2 national parks we ride to Coyhaique, a quiet town in the heart of Chilean Patagonia.
Day 7 & 8 --- Coyhaique - Puerto Guadal / 280 KM
Todays ride brings us to the shores of Lake Gral. Carrera. This lake is located half in Argentina, half in Chile. Today we stay in Chile, and we will stay in a picturesque lodge just outside the little town, on the shore of the lake. Day 8 is a resting day.
Day 9 --- Puerto Guadal - Gobernador Gregores (Argentina) / 535 KM
One of the longest riding days on the tour. Along the lake shore we ride east bound back to Argentina on a beautiful gravel road. Once in Argentina we continue on Ruta 40 south bound. A connection day crossing the Argentinian 'Pampa'. A totally deserted region in this country. Maybe you will see some wildlife, like the nandoe or guanaco. We stop for the night near the touristless town of Gobernador Gregores in a beautiful estancia.
Day 10 & 11 --- Gobernador Gregores - El Calafate / 335 KM
Oh yes, we are back in Argentina. And back on the 'never-ending' Ruta 40. On our way to quite a touristic town: El Calafate. If the visibility allows, we can see Mount Fitz Roy from the shore of Lago Viedma. Further south we will end up in the touristic town on the shore of Lago Argentino. Here we stay 2 nights.
Now you know why El Calafate is touristic. It is because of the nearby Perito Moreno glacier, part of the largest icefields in the world. On 'Day 11' we go on our motorcycles to the Glaciares National Park and see the glacier for ourselves. You can really hear (!) the glacier moving. This is absolutely one of the most impressive places on earth.
Day 12 --- El Calafate - Cerro Sombrero (Chile) / 465 KM
One of the longest ridings days of the tour. After 365 kilometers we hit the border with Chile again. And about 55 kilometers further down the road we see the always windy 'Straits of Magellan'. We will take the ferry to Tierra del Fuego. Once on the island, we follow our route to Cerro Sombrero, where we stay for the night.
Day 13 & 14 --- Cerro Sombrero - Ushuaia (Argentina) / 420 KM
Another long riding day all the way to the southern most city in the world: Ushuaia. Because this city is Argentinian, another border crossing.
'Day 14' is a day of choice. Or, you can go with your tour guide to the "End of the World" park on your motorcycle. Or, you want to discover Ushuaia and its surroundings, like a boat trip on the world famous Beagle channel. It is up to you !
Day 15 --- Ushuaia - Porvenir (Chile) / 440 KM
We are heading for Chile again. This means the last border crossing on this tour. We stay in the little town of Porvenir, still on the island of Tierra del Fuego.
Day 16 & 17 --- Porvenir - Puerto natales / 450 KM
Back on board of the 'Straits of Magellan' ferry. We are on our way to Puerto Natales, but it is NOT the end of the tour.
Becasue on 'Day 17' we will ride mostly on beautiful unpaved roads through the very impressive Torres del Paine National Park. Don't forget your camera, because the views are really spectacular. One of the many highlights during this tour. In the late afternoon we ride back to Puerto Natales for the night. Here we'll have to surrender the motorcycles and go for our farewell-dinner.
Day 18 --- Departure from Puerto Natales
We'll bring you to the airport for your flight home.

Is Peru safe to travel on your own?
YES !!! The roads are good and the people are very friendly. Of course, you'll have to be cautious, like you would be at home, or in any other part of the world.
South America (Peru) doesn't have a good reputation, but in our 12 years in business, not even one of our guests experienced big problems.
And, by the way, we live ourselves with our families for more than 12 years in this country. So far without any major problems with criminality.
Is the airfare included in the price?
No. Our guests are coming from all over the world and as a tour operator we are not big enough to bargain good prices with the airlines. So, you'll have to arrange your flight to Arequipa (and back). We will provide you the exact dates for arrival at and departure from Arequipa.
To which airport do I have to fly for a tour?
In general, you'll have to fly to Arequipa, Peru (airportcode: AQP). This city is our homebase. Normally you will fly to Lima, the capital of Peru, and take a domestic flight from there to Arequipa.
Very often the airlines offer the domestic flight from Lima (Peru) to Arequipa (Peru) for a small addition to your international airfare. Ask for it !
How do I make a booking for your tours?
Search for the <BOOKING> tab on the page of the tour you want to book. Fill out the form click <SEND>. We will contact and inform you about the rest of procedure.
I'm not very tall. Is it possible to lower the motorcycle?
Suzuki DR650: Yes, this motorcycles has the possiblity to lower the rear suspension with 5 cm.
BMW F700GS: No, we can only offer an original BMW lowered seat, which lowers the seat height with 3 cm.
BMW F800GS: No, we can only offer an original BMW lowered seat, which lowers the seat height with 3 cm.
BMW R1200GS: No, but we can put the seat in the lowest position.
Is there a spare motorcycle available on the tour?
No.
What happens if I wreck my motorcycle?
Well... with our experience, if the motocycle is wrecked beyond repair, most of the time the rider is not in a good shape to ride a motorcycle anymore. If you are still fit enough to ride, we will try to get the motorcycle back on the road. If this is not possible, we will try to replace the motorcycle. For the time being you'll have to join our mechanic in the support vehicle. Sometimes, on certain routes, the motorcycle guide can give you his motorcycle.
Is any food and/or (soft-) drinks included?
- Self guided tours: the standard breakfast in the hotels is included.
- Guided tours: the standard breakfast in the hotels and the lunches on riding days are included.
Is it likely to suffer from altitude-sickness?
Most of our tours have differences in altitudes between sea-level and about 5.000 meters (16,400 ft.). On average about 50-60% of our guests will suffer some symptoms, like headache, nauseousness, insomnia, etc. Let's say: "flu-like symptoms". It is impossible to predict who will suffer the symptoms and who won't. Fitness and age of the person doesn't seem to matter.
There is a lot you can do to avoid the symptoms: On altitude drink lot's (at least 3 liters / 0,75 a gallon) of non-alcoholic fluids, like water, coca-tea, coffee and soft drinks. And eat chocolate, candy and other sweets.
In severe cases oxigen is needed, but that is quite rare. All hotels on altitude have it available.
Or you can use medication, like Diamox. Our advise is that you don't take any medication, before you have the symptoms. In case of severe symptoms it is even better is to buy 'local stuff' in the Farmacias in Peru.
Everybody will at least notice that they are on altitude, for example while climbing stairs.
Normally your body will be adjusted to the altitude in about 4-5 days. And the symptoms will disappear by itself.
Are the airpoirt transfers in Arequipa included?
Yes ! We will pick you up from the airport, or we will send a taxi to pick you up. And, of course, after the tour we will take you to the airport for your flight home.
What is the best time of the year to pay Peru a visit?
Weatherwise, roughly between March and December, becasue that is the dry season. In the highlands a rain shower can be expected year round.
Do I need a visa for traveling to Peru?
Citizens from most countries in Europe and North and South America can enter Peru with a "Tarjeta Andina de Migración" (TAM). This is a tourist visa which you can get upon entering Peru. Please, check for yourself if you need a visa, or if you can enter with TAM.
And how about a visa for Argentina, Bolivia, Brasil, Chile and Ecuador?
It is your repsonsibility to get the necessary (tourist) visa(s) for the countries you travel. PeruMotors can not help or assist you with that.
Please, fill out the fields at the bottom of this page.
Upon booking for a tour or rental a down payment of US$ 1,000.00 per participant is required to secure your place on the tour or your rental motorcycle.
