Full tour-description:
Day 1 and 2 --- Arrival in Lima and Arequipa
The first day you will arrive in Lima, the sizzling capital of Peru. The next day you take your flight to Arequipa, our hometown. Here we will brief you about your tour.
The rest of the day you can stroll the streets of Arequipa and visit the famous Plaza de Armas and museums in the white city.
Day 3 --- Arequipa - Moquegua
Finally we leave Arequipa on our motorcycles. Through the dryest desert in the world we ride to the 'Copper capital of Peru': Moquegua.
Day 4 --- Moquegua - Arica (Chili)
Today we experience the border formalities for the first time. Once in Chile we'll arrive quickly in the most northern city of Chile: Arica. In this town it is always springtime and it has a mediterenian feel.
Day 5 and 6 --- Arica - Iquique
From Arica it is exact 300 kilometers to the next big city in Chile: Iquique. Sand, sand and sand again... but with the clear blue sky the views are great. If we have the time, we will visit an old salpetermine. We stay a whole day in Iquique, so you can explore the city where you can parapente, stroll along the beach and/or visit the biggest shopping mall in South America.
Day 7 --- Iquique - Calama
We follow the coastline southbound for about 160 kilometers. Then we go inland on a straight line of 150 kilometers. After this long stretch we arrive in Calama, the 'Copper capital of the world'.
Day 8 --- Calama - San Juan (Bolivia)
From Calama it is 160 kilometers to the border with Bolivia. Along this road we leave the asphalt behind and start riding on gravel. After the formalities on the border we leave Chile behind us. Many kilometers over lonely saltflats. Then we arrive in the little town of San Juan. Here we will spend the night in a basic hotel.
Day 9 --- San Juan - Uyuni
We are heading for the absolute highlight of this tour: the Saltflats of Uyuni (Salar de Uyuni). Millions of years ago the flats were seabeds. We will visit the salthotel and Fish Island (Isla de Pescado) in the middle of the saltflats. We will spend the night in a nice hotel in Uyuni, with the best pizzas on the southern hemisphere.
Day 10 and 11 --- Uyuni - Potosi
Nowadays the road to Potosi is almost totally paved. Along the way we will visit the old coppermine of Pulacayo. Potosi was in its days the richest city of South America and maybe of the whole world. Still it is the highest city in the world on 4.100 meters. De Spaniards robbed the city completely. You can visit the old mine 'Cerro Rico' and buy dynamite in the little shops.
Day 12 --- Potosi - Oruro
A quiet connection day. We leave the high mountains and enter the Altiplano on our way to Oruro.
Day 13 and 14 --- Oruro - Coroico
On our way to La Paz, the un-official capital of Bolivia. We will return later in this city. Now we have to cross the big city to go to the highland jungle of Coroico. Here we stay in a very nice hotel. And because it is so nice we stay 2 nights here.
Day 15 --- Coroico - La Paz
Another highlight of this tour: 'Deathroad of Bolivia', once the most dangerous road in the world. Today this road is not in use anymore. If weather permits we will ride this road back to la Paz. We stay in the civic centre of the city, close to the 'Witch-market' and you can visit the "Valley of the Moon".
Day 16 --- La Paz - Desaguadero
The Morning is at leisure in la Paz. After lunch we ride to Desaguadero on the border between Bolivia and Peru. We need the rest of the day and the next day for the border formalities.
Day 17 and 18 --- Desaguadero - Puno
When our vehicles are FINALLY released from the Customs Service, we follow along teh shores of Lake Titicaca to Puno. We stay 2 nights here, so we can use Day 18 for a cruise on the highest navigable lake in the world.
Day 19 --- Puno - Chivay (Colca Canyon)
Fist 60 kilometers on good gravel. Further over asphalt, crossing the mighty Andes, to the deepest canyon in the world: Colca Canyon. We will pass the highest point of this journey on 4,910 meters. Then the descent ot Chivay in the heart of the Colca Canyon. In Chivay we can enjoy the thermal baths.
Day 20 --- Chivay
(Colca Canyon) - Arequipa
First we will visit early in the morning "Cruz del Condor" in
the deepest canyon in the world, the Colca Canyon. This is one of the best places
to spot the Andean Condor in the wild. Then we hit the tarmac and slowly comes
Arequipa in sight. In the evening we'll enjoy a cold beer and a alpaca-steak
in one of the many restaurants and bars in the centre of Arequipa.
Day 21 --- Transfer
In the afternoon we will bring you to the airport of Arequipa
for your flight to Lima. In Lima you will catch your international flight
home.
